Spend a Night in Jail: The Netherlands’ Prison Hotel Experience

Apr 12, 2024

Have you ever envisioned spending a romantic evening in a jail cell? Your oddly specific dream can now come true thanks to a unique luxury hotel in the Netherlands.

With a significant drop in crime rates, the Netherlands has been closing numerous prisons, and the private sector has seized the opportunity to repurpose these historic buildings. One such example is the Het Arresthuis in Roermond, a former prison now transformed into an upscale hotel. This building, which dates back to the mid-19th century, has retained much of its original architecture to preserve its historical significance, including the original cell doors.

The hotel offers two types of rooms: the “Comfort Cells,” which consist of three former cells combined, and the “Deluxe Cells,” which are converted from former prison recreation rooms. Despite the building’s past, guests will find modern amenities that far surpass the experiences of former inmates. Each suite is elegantly decorated and features air-conditioning and complimentary Wi-Fi. The courtyard has been converted into a terrace for fine dining, and the old gymnasium has been repurposed into a sauna.

At approximately $200 USD per night, a stay in this hotel is a fascinating choice for those who enjoy unconventional accommodations and a touch of unusual history.
