Four Seasons Introduces Custom Bed and Comprehensive Sleep Program for Hotels and Resorts

Jun 25, 2024

It’s well-known that the quality of sleep is a crucial factor for travelers when selecting a hotel. Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts has taken a significant step forward in the competitive “bed wars” by launching a custom bed along with an extensive array of sleep programs and experiences at their locations worldwide. The brand conducted a survey involving travelers from the US, Great Britain, Russia, and China to better understand their needs on the road.

“New research confirms what our guests have consistently shared with us – while sleep needs vary, the desire for a restful night is universal,” said Chris Hunsberger, Executive Vice President of Product and Innovation at Four Seasons.

The Four Seasons Bed

The survey revealed that a vast majority of participants (92%) have specific preferences regarding mattress firmness. The newly introduced Four Seasons Bed is designed to cater to these preferences. Created by Simmons, the mattress features a patented “GelTouch foam center” that manages heat absorption. Guests can choose from three firmness levels: signature, signature plush, and signature firm. Additionally, many hotels personalize the sleep experience further with a selection of pillows and bedside amenities. Guests can also purchase the bed through the hotel concierge or front desk.

Custom Sleep Experiences

The survey highlighted that bedding is just one component of achieving the perfect sleep. Factors such as noise levels, adjustable room temperature, availability of fresh air, the capability to create a completely dark environment at any time, and dealing with jet lag are crucial. These needs can vary significantly by nationality, gender, and age.

Dana Kalczak, Vice President of Design at Four Seasons, noted, “One interesting finding is that younger travelers are more likely to have specific sleep preferences and to communicate them.” Kalczak, who has a background in architecture and interior design, mentioned that developing a new Four Seasons hotel involves creating an offsite model guest room to test and anticipate every guest need.

“We test everything to ensure optimal comfort – from the bed’s position for views and TV watching, to lighting for reading, and ensuring all necessary amenities are within easy reach,” she added. “We are meticulous about this.”

Sleep-Focused Hotels

While the bed program will be implemented across all Four Seasons hotels and resorts, the brand already offers numerous sleep-enhancing programs. Some notable examples include:

  • Four Seasons Hotel Singapore: Offers a “Deep Sleep 101” CD in each room, providing a course in falling and staying asleep with soothing ambient sounds and melodies.
  • Four Seasons Resort Seychelles: At turndown, rooms are infused with tropical fragrances such as eucalyptus staigeriana (a local plant with calming properties similar to lavender) and patchouli.
  • Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea: Features a pillow menu with five different types of pillows tailored to various sleeping positions and firmness preferences. The resort also provides complimentary amenities like relaxing yoga DVDs and calming bath salts.

These initiatives underscore Four Seasons’ commitment to enhancing the sleep quality of their guests, ensuring that travelers can enjoy a restful and rejuvenating stay.
