Farewell First Class: American Airlines Introduces Flagship Suites

Historically, first-class travel on U.S. airlines has been declining, with an increasing preference for business class among passengers. In response, American Airlines has decided to phase out first-class on its long-haul fleet beginning in 2024. This change will be marked by the introduction of the Flagship Suite seats, which will be featured on new Airbus A321XLR and Boeing 787-9 aircraft deliveries starting in the same year.

The new Flagship Suite seats will provide a luxurious experience with features such as a privacy door, chaise lounge seating, and additional personal storage. These elements aim to offer a tailored luxury experience, creating a private retreat for passengers in the sky. Additionally, American Airlines plans to update its 16-plane Boeing 777-300ER fleet with these new interiors, enhancing the inflight experience for long-haul international routes. The revamped aircraft will have an increased number of premium seats, boasting 70 Flagship Suite seats and 44 Premium Economy seats.

Passengers will also notice improvements starting from the Admirals Club lounges, which are being redesigned with sustainable wood elements. The first of these updated lounges will open at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) this fall. This cohesive design will extend from the lounges to the aircraft interiors, ensuring a consistent premium feel throughout the customer journey.

Upon boarding the redesigned aircraft, which have been crafted by the design firm Teague, passengers will be welcomed by an illuminated American Flight Symbol and thin red accent lines, adding to the sophisticated ambiance.

Julie Rath, American’s Vice President of Customer Experience, highlighted that these changes are part of a broader effort to enhance the overall customer experience. By 2026, the introduction of new interiors will result in a more than 45 percent increase in premium seating on American’s long-haul fleet. Specifically, the Boeing 787-9 aircraft will feature 51 Flagship Suite seats and 32 Premium Economy seats, while the Airbus A321XLR aircraft will include 20 Flagship Suite seats and 12 Premium Economy seats.

Since 2016, American Airlines has been a pioneer in offering long-haul Premium Economy seats. In response to growing customer demand, the airline is increasing the number of Premium Economy seats on its long-haul flights. These new seats are custom-designed to offer greater privacy and double the in-seat storage space compared to previous designs.

Furthermore, American is retrofitting its 16-aircraft Airbus A321T fleet to match the rest of its A321 aircraft. The airline will continue to provide lie-flat seats on its transcontinental routes departing from New York and Boston, in partnership with JetBlue Airways under the Northeast Alliance.
